| Playwright | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| License | Free and open source under Apache-2.0. | Source |
| Browser engines | Chromium, Firefox and WebKit through one API. | Source |
| Languages | TypeScript, Python, Java and .NET. | Source |
| Agent workflow | Planner, generator and healer agents produce a plan, create test files and attempt repairs. Plans and tests are files in your repo. | Source |
| Component tests | Playwright Test supports testing components of your web app in isolation. | Source |
| MCP | Playwright MCP gives coding agents browser control through structured accessibility snapshots. | Source |
How the workflows differ
| Playwright | Monito | |
|---|---|---|
| Authoring | Write test code or record browser actions to generate it. Playwright Test supplies assertions, auto-waiting and tracing. Source | Describe the browser journey and expected result in plain English. |
| Where tests live | Test code and agent-generated plans live in your repository. Source | Scenarios saved in Monito, with Markdown export. No Playwright code export. |
| Pricing model | The framework is free under Apache-2.0. Evaluate your own runner and maintenance costs separately from the license. Source | Pro is $79/month for 700 credits. Test runs and Discovery spend credits; see the offer below. |
| Triggers | Run in your CI provider. The setup can add a GitHub Actions workflow for pushes and pull requests. Source | Web app, CLI and MCP. Schedules, deploy webhooks and GitHub Actions are available; plan requirements are below. |
| Maintenance | Your team owns the test files. The healer agent proposes patches and reruns tests; it may skip a test when it believes the functionality is broken. Source | You update the scenario when the expected behavior changes. The agent chooses browser actions during each run. |
Where Playwright is the better fit
Choose Playwright when you want test code under review in the repository, with agent-generated plans and repairs that your team can inspect. Source
Choose Playwright when you need Chromium, Firefox and WebKit coverage or want to shard tests across multiple CI machines. Monito does not provide multiple browser engines. Source
Choose Playwright when the test needs to exercise a component in isolation rather than a complete deployed browser journey. Source
The cost of owning a scripted suite
A scripted suite needs an owner. When selectors or expected behavior change, someone must decide whether to update the test or report a regression. Count that maintenance work alongside the runner's price.
Playwright's auto-waiting and retrying assertions reduce timing mistakes, but they still stop at a timeout. A slow CI run can need investigation even when the application is healthy. Budget for diagnosing flaky runs as well as maintaining selectors. Source
Our team recommends keeping a thin scripted suite where exact assertions and a predictable sequence matter, with someone responsible for maintaining it. Try an agent-run scenario alongside it for a complete user journey. Agent runs can choose different steps and can be wrong; review the evidence before relying on a verdict.
Where Monito fits
Use Monito when you want a hosted browser run and report without maintaining a runnable test file. You still write the expected result and decide whether the evidence supports it.
Keep scripted checks where you need explicit control over each assertion. Evaluate a plain-English scenario alongside them for a complete journey, such as checkout followed by an order-history check after reload.
Monito runs desktop Chromium. It does not test native mobile apps, provide Firefox or WebKit runs, or export Playwright code.
Monito pricing
Pro is $79/month for 700 credits, counted on the pricing page as about 600 test runs and 5 Discoveries. A test run is 1 credit and Discovery is 20, so the same 700 credits are 700 test runs if you skip Discovery. Team is $199/month for 1,800 credits (about 1,500 tests and 15 Discoveries). Yearly plans cost ten monthly payments ($790 and $1,990) and grant twelve months of credits upfront. If Monito caused the error, that run is free.
50 free test credits every month. Your balance refills to 50 on the 1st of each month (UTC), counting credits reserved by running tests. Unused credits are not added again; purchased credits are kept. Your signup credits count as the first month. Free includes one daily schedule. Verify your email to receive monthly refills. Any schedule other than that one daily schedule, a deploy webhook, GitHub Actions, and a public status page need Pro.
Published benchmark evidence
On the held-out benchmark measured 2026-10-12, the verdict was right on 58 of 60 runs, with 0 false passes in 30 chances (95% upper bound 9.6%). The held-out set covers 5 open-source apps.
On our own corpus, measured 2026-10-05, the verdict was right on 110 of 111 runs, with 0 false passes in 57 chances (95% upper bound 5.2%), and 88 of 111 verdicts cited the required evidence. Neither set is a promise about your app. The held-out set is a small number of real bugs in open-source apps. The corpus is ours. The method and the limits are on the reliability page.
